LAUNCHING AT WHIRINAKI

A REMARKABLE PERFORMANCE

Commenting on the launching of the 'Bailey Bridge' at Whirinaki by the Military engineers the chairman of the. Whakatane County Council at last week's, meeting described the whole performance as little short of wonderful. Those, councillors, who were able to see the work carried out he said were all deeply impressed with the potentialities of the bridge. Started at 7 o'clock in the morning the bridge had actually reached the other side by noon, and provided a strong substantial structure. It was an education to see it done. Mr Burnett was also warm in his praise for the men who he said had worked hard and were a husky lot. A letter from Lieut. J. E. Johnson who was in charge of the construction gang was received conveying the thanks to the Murupara people for their co-operation in the erection of the Bailey Bridge. The maximum assistance was also received from the Council's, foreman on the job and both lie and Mr Cawte and their workmen toiled hard throughout, the week-end. The thanks of the writer ami his Serwere asked to be placed on record for their hard work and co-operation. The Council resolved that the sentiments and thanks submitted be reciprocated.
