FALL OF FIRST SATELLITE
RUMANIA, erstwhile friend and ally of Great Britain has capitulated. The surrender of this country before the weight of the Soviet invasion, and under the continual pressure of the Allied bombers, marks the first of the lesser States under Nazi domination to secede from "the Axis confederation, and brings forcibly, the armistsce sought by Bulgaria in faraway 1918, when the first signs of German disintegration were then showing after four weary years of war. The present capitulation coincides with the recapture of the French Capital and the surrender of the Nazi garrison of RHarsailles in Southern France. To mark the great event, the Prime Minister of this country has requested that throughout the Dominion the occasion shall be marked with the flying of flags and bunting, the ringing of bells, and the meeting of peoples wherever possible, to-day Friday, August 25th. The celebration is intended not merely to mark the preat events of Allied conquest but also to pay a tribute to the valour of the Allied soldiers, sailors and airmen in all theares of war and to the spirit of resurgent France, and further to reaffirm this country's determination to do whatever is in our power on the Home Front to shorten the struggle for what is now' as» sured —certain victory against Nazi Germany.
