THE BLANKET SHORTAGE
THE efforts of the Government to supply some of the Northern Maoris with blankets earlier in the winter in an effort to offset the acute shortage has served to direct public attention to the far-reaching nature of the problem. Neither must it be thought that the shortage is restricted to the Maori race. There are many Pakeha mothers who are just as worried over the question of providing adequate: warmth for their little ones. The Maori shortage is however the subject which has received the main flood of the spotlight, and it was in this connection that a well respected Maori woman rang this office last week, and complained that it was no wonder the Maoris had to go cold this winter for irrespective of whether the blankets were available or not, they simply could not afford to pay the exorbitant prices asked. She claimed that she had just prior to ringing been forced to pay (if she wanted them at all) £8 per pair for two pairs of double blankets. No Maori, she declared however liberal his wages could hope to maintain a home and a family in the face of such prices.
