CRIPPLED CHILDREN

CURE OF DISTRICT CASES

HOSPITAL BOARD DISCUSSION

[ The Crippled Ghildrens' Society (Auckland) notified the Whakatane Hospital Board at its meeting last week to the effect, that a sub-centre had been established at Tauranga embracing the Thames and Bay of Plenty Hospital areas. Mrs M. Christian, secretary of the, sub-centre also wrote stating thfit the inspector (Miss Joyce Adams) had been appointed to supervise the area involved and the Hospital Boards within the area had been asked to sympathetically co-operate in all matters pertaining to the welfare of crippled children. At the request of the chairman, Dr. Dawson explained that, the Crippled Childrens' Society had recently enlarged its sphere of action, and was taking in a much broader scope than previously. In Whakatane originally, the' Society had been represented by a small committee which included Messrs C. G. Lucas, D. V. Saunders, F. Prideaux and himself. This committee had examined and handled many crippled cases, sending the children away to Auckland where specialists diagnosed their incapacities. The committee also endeavoured to have the children taught remunerative' occupations. Latterly the group had been dissolved and the local branch of the Red Cross Society had undertaken the work. The appointment of the new welfare officer would mean a further stimulus toi the good work which, in his opinion should be warmly encouraged by the board. The board decided to reply to the effect that it w T as; sympathetically disposed towards the work of the Society, and would do all in 'its power to lend it encburagement.
