BOROUGH COMMITTEE MEETS

PAST YEAR REVIEWED ,

In his annual review of the activities of the Whakatane Patriotic Committee, the chairman, Mr B. S. Barry mentioned that, to date the sum of £7060 had been raised, which was something to be proud of. He took the opportunity of cordially thanking all who had contributed in any way towards this splendid total., The meeting took place in the Borough Council Chambers last Thursday and was attended by H'is Worship the Mayor (chairman), Mesdames Sullivan, Winstone and Shapley; Good, Dainton, Suckling H.'L. King, Hubbard, Cai'sley Warren and 'Saunders (secretary). Apologies were received from Mesdames James, Bennett, Winstone and Messrs Brockett, Buddie and Cutler. Mr Barry said that the work had proceeded steadily during the year, splendid work being performed by the Ladies' Committee, and by the canvassers. Last year's quota had been comfortably met and there was a small surplus. The committee acknowledged the assistance by way of benefit contributions from the school play 'Patience' (£ll 5s 3d) and the Spitfire Re.vue. The ladies committee had undertaken to raise a further £500 of the new quota, which for the Borough, and Oliope was £1514. Already the sum of £1184 had been raised made up as follows: Ladies committee £374, men's committee £810. Outside firms with branches in Whakatane had contributed as under: Messns Hannah's Ltd £20; Farmers.' Trading Co, £10; Marriotts Ltd £5; and Self Help* £9. Mr Barry was reappointed chairman, and Mr Saunders, secretary. The executive committee was fixed as the chairman and secretary of both the Men's and Ladies' Committee and the main committee.
