BREACH OF REGULATIONS

MAORIS PROSECUTED

In the Whakatane. Court last Tuesday, Peter Wano, a Matata Maori pleaded guilty to the sale, of two gallons of petrol from his current license to George Savage in contravention of the ActSergeant Farrell stated that defendant had been given the licensq to take him to and from his work at the Paper Mills. He had transferred two gallons without any authority to Savage. The license had since been cancelled. Mr Barry who defended, explained that Savage was a returned man from the Middle East, and Wano had merely loaned him the two gallons to enable him to travel round the country and see his relatives. A fine of £2 and costs 25s had been imposed. Under the same heading, George Savage was also charged with hav-< ing purchased two gallons of petrol in defiance of the Oil Fuel Emergency Regulations. Mr Barry stated that defendant had just returned from service with the Maori Battalion, and was ignorant of the regulations. Fined £2 and costs 275.
