COMMUNIST PARTY & RELIGION

frim the ideals set out by His Majesty the King. Apparently the King does not share his views. He has had a sword specially forged and has presented it to the heroic; Communist people, of Stalingrad. Neither does Mr Winston Churchill think as Britisher does (which perhaps, very fortunate for the people of the British Empire). He has signed a 20-year pact with the. Communist Soviet Union.

The Dean of Canterbury is another great man who differs from Britisher in his opinion. He writes: "To the Communist as to the true Christian community is paramount. Man realises himself in society. The Communist puts the Christian to shame in the thoroughness of his quest for the harmonious society. Here he proves himself to be heir of the Christian intention."

The Communist attack upon idealism, as well, as the Communist struggle for community, contains an element of true religion,, and as such demands Christian recognition.

Had Christians from the first but given to Communists the welcome which was due to men whose motto

. . . "from everyone according to his ability, to everyone, according to his needs" . . . is so wholly Christian, and who had passed from words to deeds in the construction of a concrete order based on these principles Christians would have done more honour to the intentions of their Founder."

Yours etc.. SECRETARIAT, Edgecumbe Branch, Communist Party of New Zealand.

Sir,—ln reply to Britisher's let-* ter we should like to state that through inadequate knowledge o£ his subject, he. has gone somewhat astray. He says that anyone who is 'a member of a Christian organisation cannot be a member of the ComH munist Party. This is not so. It is true that Communist philosophy is a materialist one ... it does not resort to supernatural explanations of the universe . . . but the Communist party welcomes into its ranks people of all religions, as long as those people are prepared to work for tlie overthrow of Fascism and the attainment of a better social order. Britisher states that there is a great gulf, separating Communists.
