RED GROSS SOCIETY
JULY MEETING HELD ACTIVE MONTH REVIEWED The. monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society took place in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday, July 11 at 2 p.m. with Mrs W. Sullivan in the chair. Mrs Sullivan said the result of the Polish Relief Appeal in Whakatanc realised £187 5s 3d, and the total for the Eastern Bay of Plenty Centre Avas £202 19s 9d. This was, considered an excellent result. Mrs Sullivan reported on a meeting of the Centre which had been attended by delegates from the Gpotiki Centre. She felt it was a good idea for the different Centres in the Bay to get together and discuss matters. Tauranga had also been invited to send delegates but, owing to transport difficulties, had been unable to do so. The idea had been suggested by Mr C. G. White,, Chairman of the Dominion Executive, when lie had visited Whakatane district last year, and it was hoped that, further meetings could be held from time to time. The Opotiki delegates were very interested in the shop, they did not run one themselves, only a Patriotic Shop open one day a week. I't was found, too, that their Comforts Committee covered a wider scope of work than the one here. It. was interesting, both to the Opotiki and Whakatanc members to discuss various and both parties found the, meeting interesting and instructive. Mrs Sullivan also detailed a ve« quest from Mr Lucas that the Society take over the work of the Crippled Children Society in Whakatanc. The Executive Committee had discussed the matter, and recommended that it be done and the committee adopted the recommendation. Hospital Visiting: Mrs T. W. James said there had only been one soldier patient in the hospital for most of the month, but he had left and there were none in now. Shop: Mrs James read out the shop takings for the month, and a discussion took place re shop matters . V.A.D.: Mrs Prideaux reported that the present Home Nursing classes would finish on the 12th, and then the examination would be held. Regular monthly meetings were be-, ing held. Knitting Circle: Mrs Timbs was absent, but sent in a report of work despatched during the month, i.e.. for the Joint Council 18 pairs socks, ' 14 pullovers, 2 pairs gloves; for Patriotic 1 pair socks, 7 pairs mit- - tens,. 1 pullover; 9 balaclavas, 11 scarves 53 articles in all. Red Cross Magazine: Mrs Caisley said she was still getting new subscribers, and a number were sold at the shop, but the full number was still not being disposed of each monthLady Gal way Guild: Mrs Moran said she would be packing more cases soon* and would be glad of donations of garments to fill up the cases. Mrs Creeke said she would like to suggest donating most of the stocks of refugee clothing accumulated at the request of the E.P.S. about two years ago. The need in Britain was much more urgent than here, especially at present owing to the damage caused by the flying bombs. Mrs Sullivan said there had been many demands on their stock of clothing, and she thought some should be held. After further discussion it was decided that some of the clothing that could be spared, or that would deteriorate by being stored should be given, to the Lady Galway Guild. Members said they would get together and make some new garments if the need here became urgent. This concluded the meeting.
