USED KEROSENE
MIXED WITH BENZINE MOTORIST BEFORE COURT "You are not supposed to use kerosene at all without making a declaration and -paying tax." said Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Thames Magistrate's Court, Avhen a case arose in which defendant had been mixing kerosene with benzine in his ear. Lan Angcll, stainehand, of Parawai, was charged that on May 29 lie drove a car on the Great South Road at Auckland without a licence, without a Avarrant of fitness, that the motive power of his vehicle not being wholly derived from motor spirit, lie failed to make a declaration of mileage, in the period specified, for the previous month, and that he used lighting kerosene for the propulsion of the vehicle. He pleaded guilty to all charges. Sergeant W. W. Ferguson said defendant had been questioned by a detective, who found the. kerosene in his ear. Defendant had told him that he had a licence and a warrant of fitness at Thames, but it had been found that this was not the case. He had been mixing kerosene /with, benzine, for some time. The sergeant said defendant was receiving a low Avage and had asked for time in which to pay a fine. The magistrate asked what he was doing with a car. The sergeant said it Avas a very old car and he doubted if defendant could give it away. Defendant left Thames one dny and did not arrive in Auckland till the next. Defendant said he had gone to Auckland to see his brother, who was ill. The magistrate asked him if his brother took ill at the time of the races, and defendant said there were no races on then. Defendant was fined 10s on each charge.
