HILL CEMETERY
DECORATIVE TREES SELECTED VISIT TO ROTORUA ' : On Thuisday, a committee from ; the Borough Council consisting of /f Messrs D. V. Saunders, A. J.. Canning and J. Creeke with, Mr H. War- j; ren in an advisory capacity visited Rotorua lor the purpose of inspect-r ing plantations and nurserys in that area with an eye. to selecting suitable trees for planting at the Whakatane Hill Cemetery. The committee were the guests of His Worship the Mayor of Rotorua, •' Mr R. Kusabs, who conducted them on a tour of the public w'orks of the Rotorua Borough including the parks and reserves. A visit was paid to Goudie's nursery where an opportunity was given for the visitors to inspect many different types of trees. As consideration had to be given to the types of trees suitable to the soil, the situation and existing climatic conditions, the expert advice offered by Mr Goudie Avas mst helpful. The. trees which were decided upon as being the most suitable for the purpose required were as follows:— For the road boundary, the Himalayan Cedar;, a tree of elegant and graceful appearance which has penI dulous. foliage of a grey-igreen colour. A handsome speciman fir was selected for planting at the entrance; one on either side of the gateway. For the bank at the western entrance a speciman of Eucalpytus Saligna, a quite good looking and tall growing gum was thought to be suitable while the well known flowering gum could be used to line the sides of the entrance.. The above would be in the nature of a foundation for future plantings although the committee have still to inspect the cemetery and decide the number of each variety and the exact positions in which they are to be planted.
