WHAKATANE GOLF CLUB

MIXED CANADIAN FOURSOMES

Perfect golfing conditions prevailed last Saturday at the links, when a mixed Canadian foursome was played. Nineteen foursomes faced the ■ tape making a total of 7G players , plus 2 extra girls unattached. A very impressiA r e field indeed. After a certain amount of milling and confusion,, foursomes AA'ere at. last sorted out and the respectiA r e sections stood at their official starting tees. The first lot left at 1 pip ernma and the last at 1.45. The course. Avas all clear at. 4.45. Tt is to be hoped that eA 7 eryone had an enjoyable daj r . If there be any Avho didn't, it Avould not luu'e been the fault of the day Avhich Avas perfect; nor of the course, Avhich Avas in good order; nor of the. divots, because placing had again to be invoked to help both the player and the turf. A Canadian foursome is a good competition for a time like this. You share the ball., thus saving either yours or your partners. Also, being a period of the shortest day, a foursome. plays the round quicker than if four balls Averc in play. And again, if you duff a shot,, you have someone to blame, for the unplayable position you found the ball in. These are the minor compensating factors in faA r our of this type of competition, the main ones of course., being the development of good generalship and combination and the mutual endcaA'our to play shots to the greatest adA'antage of, the team, Good team Avork is the slogan, and with such a slogan, ones golf is sure to improA'e. As a result, some Aery creditable performances were returned. Three pairs had a gross round of 87. The best, nett scorc came from the juniors Mrs Bennett (36) and Denliam (24) 93—30—63. Then came the senior Avinners —Mrs Winstone and Symc 87—22 —65. Mrs Cockburn and Moore 95—28—67 Averc next followed by Miss Tait and Milne 89—20—69 and Miss Graham and Connell 90 —20 —70. FolloAving are the results in detail and in sequence of nett scores:—. Senior Section Mrs "Winstone and Symc 87 —22— 65; Miss Tait and Milne 89—20—69; Miss Graham and Connell 90—20—70; Mrs Symmans and CradAvic'k 87—13 —74; Miss Black and PoAvdre.ll 87— 13—71,; Mrs Pcarse and Anderson 100—26—74; Mrs DaAvson and Carter 89—14,—75; Mrs Barry and Bridget' 99—24—75; Mrs Otley and R.
