WIN FOR WHAKATANE
The match between A.T.C. and Whakatane Juniors on Saturday resulted in a good Avin for Whakatane by 34 points to nil. The: standard of football was consistently good, A.T.C. getting the ball most, of the time from the scrum. L. Candy (last man down) by reason of his height was a decided advantage to A.T.C. in the line out although as soon as j he touched the ball the Whakatane pack invariably ran over him. W. Stewart played a very sound game for A.T.C. at centre, while Cameron (Whakatane Captain) made several spectacular rushes scoring three good tries. The standard of A.T.C. football was definitely much better than is indicated by the score. The pack played a good solid game leading many rushes to Whakatane's 25, where only determined defence play stopped A.T.C. from crossing the line. Air Training Corps had most of the ball in the scrums and lineouts but the back line; were too well marked to gain much ground. Teams were as follows: — Whakatane (Blue): Walker; Dines; Green; Ward; Savage; Clark; S'kelton; Beveridge,; Hudson; Bluett; L-S-tewart; Cameron; Beaumont; Hunt and F. Stewart. A.T.C. (Yellow): A. Moore; Sloane; Crozier; Sullivan;, MickelL; Lalolir, Howat; Candy; Takao; Te Maipi; Torrie,; W. Stewart;, Meyer; Henderson and Malmanche. A.T.C. took the kick, Whakatane playing against a fresh breeze- Hard pack work at half way followed and the ball went out to the Whakatane line. Across it. went, and Bluett took it to A.T.C/s goal liiie. The yellow side, defended well, but Clark, snapping up the ball dived over the line, giving Whakatane first blood. The kick off went straight to the Whakatane pack which rushed it again to Air Training Corps' quarter. Hunt gathered in and was well away when Stewart grassed him with a nice tackle. Bluett picked up and passed to Cameron. Cameron knocked on and a scrum followed. Out came the ball. ®Hunt kicked; Stewart returned and Cameron took it to the: Air Cadets 25, where it was scrummed. A.T.C. hooked but. Skelton (break away) was right on to the leather # Two yards from the goal; line Ward gathered in. and dived over the line giving Whakatane another try. The kick missed and the scoreboard read Whakatane 6, A.T.C. 0. Back at half way, Savage took a nice catch and drove through to the yellow 25 again. A penalty was awarded to A.T.C. and in the exchange of kicks which followed the ball found the line from F„ art's boot. In it. came and Howat was right there:. The. Whakatane pack blocked a promising rush, however, and Bluett gathered in. Across the field he went, and passed to Hunt on the wing who fairly flew over for another try. Whakatane 9, A.T.C. 0. Gathering in again, Savage tried a solo rush. Te Maipi ay as safe, however, and grassed him,, A scrum followed. Dines hooked. Bluett picked, passed to L. Stewart—out to> the AA r ing; back to SteAvart; and out to Skelton who sailed over the line adding another three points to Whakatane's score. From the kick off, the two packs fought for possession. Suddenly the ball came, out to Stewart, tlieni fto Cameron Avho fumbled, asd tihe A.T.C. pack rushed it to Whakah tane's goal line. A penalty ki:k was aAA'arded A.T.C. but the conversion fell short and fie Whakatane pack rushed the leather back to half-way. Moore took the kick from the and lined aa'cll in "Whakatane's 25. From the throw in the ball Avent out to Cameron. Snapping it in he set off on a solo rush downfield, selling tAvo nice dummies and crossing the line 25 yards ahead of the nearest' opposing man. Beaumont converted and the score for Whakatane Avent to 17. Play resumed and the ball Avas rushed to A.T.C.'s quarter again. Suddenly the ball Avent out to Cameron again Avho diA'cd OA T er the line for another try. The kick fell short and the scoreboard read 20 to nil in Whakatane's favour. Meyer led the next rush for A.T.C. and a penalty kick Avent against Whakatane. Meyer's kick from justbehind the 25 lire hit the post and bounced back into play. W. SteAVart snapped it up but knocked it on and a s:rum was ordered. Sloane hooked cleanly but a promising try was converted to a 25 by Hudson. The Whakatane pack immediately took possession and Beaumont made a good rush but was turfed short ol th? line. Snapping up the sphere again he ducked round and dived over the line adding another three points to Whakatane's score. Two more tries for Whakatane by Green and Bluett followed in quick succession and the. blue team's score,
which was now attaining cricket proportions totalled 31, the latter try be;ing converted. Green, initiated another rush for Whakatane but lost control to Henderson who forced. Torrie was right under the kick and helped the leather to Whakatane's 25. Ward took possession and rushed it back to half way. Hudson picked uji and passed to Bluett —out to Stewart, then to Cameron who dived over the line for the final try ol' the game. The kick fell short and the whistle went, the final reading of the .scoreboard showing Whakatane .'it, Air Training Corps nil. Mr H, Maliy referced.
