OBITUARY
MR JAMES CAMPNY A link with the old days of Te; Puke, Tauranga and Rotorua was severed on Sunday with the quiet passing of Mr James Campny at the age of 84 years. He was born (n Auckland in the year 1860, being the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs James Campny,, who for many years owned the Masonic Ho'.el and farmed at Gate Pa. The late Mr Campny was well known in the early days throughout the. Bay of Plenty as a coach driver. During Wis coaching days he travelled on Jhe various routes such as Cambridge, Tlrau. Rotorua, Taupo and Gisborne About 45 years ago he had a bond stores in Te Puke and was ant active trader in many lines. Later he hi-icf a sulphur contract at Rotorui lor Messrs Kempthorne Prdsser but this finally becams unpayable as ulphur could be brought, more cheaply from Japan. He was one of. the old of Rotorua and had vivid memories of the Pink and White Terraces'. Mr Campny rode through from Tauranga at the time, of the Tirawera eruption, going from Rotorua oil foot to Te Wairoa where he assisted in the rescue of some, of the Hazard family. He loved to tell most fascinating stories of the young Rotorua days and many emlne it authorities have used his "fund of information for recording purposjs. Forty years ago Mr Campny married Miss Rcse Helenor Busheli, who was milliner to the firm of Robert King and Co. The funeral was held on Tuesday and after a service in the Anglican Church, Te Puke, a large gathering of the older generation paid their last respects at the graveside. Mourning his loss is his wife and two children, Mrs P. Basham, of Te Puke and Mr H.J. Campny of Paengaroa. There were six grandchildren.
