BRICK AREA AGAIN
FURTHER VARIATION WANTED
APPLICATION DISCUSSED
The application of Mr P. Coutts to erect a pre-fabricated structure on his pi;operty in Toroa Street (which is within the Brick Area) caused the usual discussion at the meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council last Monday evening. It was agreed to advertise the application in the usual manner and to reconsider the matter at the next meeting. The Electrical Engineer said that the building proposed to be erected was an Army hut, upon which the Mayor said he did not favour the granting of. the permit. The Deputy-Mayor disagreed pointing out that the building was on par with a wash-house and was aimed at relieving the problem of living accommodation. Cr Creeke took his consistent stand against any variation of the by-laws, which would lead to precedents in the future. Cr Sullivan considered that the Brick Area as constituted in Whakatane was altogether too large. Most of the houses erected in that vicinity were in variation of the bylaw, the Council having granted permission in view of the fact that it could never become the site of future business premises. He could see. no objection to the application. A new view was taken by Cr Warren, who pointed out that being in the vicinity of the Pa, it was no encouragement for the Maoris to better their accommodation, if the Council were going to permit the use of Army huts for accommodation.
