ELECTRICITY RATES

Sir, —I read with great satisfaction the remarks of the Mayor, Mr Barry, on the amended electricity rhtes for lighting, heating and range account. It gave me great pleasure to kno-w that the. points raised in my letter of t the 28th May to the Beacon, have been noted and made the basis of a check up on the first proposed rate., The only thing I am sorry about 1 is, that he and his advisers did not look into the possibility of other anomalies- to some consumers before the election. Then Mr Allen and myself would perhaps have obtained more votes bringing us closer to being elected as progressive niembors. ol' the Council. The Mayor stated that the rates in their practical application had. been found to create a burden on certain consumers. T may add that the practical application of these rates is no different to the theoretical application, which could have been found out quite easy by taking a cross section of the consumers accounts, of which the Council has copies, and comparing the ex-> isting with the new rates. It is straight arithmetic. The Council will of. course, riot give others or myself credit . for this recent, reduction. However I will continue to point out these, things in the interests of the citizens of Whakatane. Yours etc.,. N. S. MAJOR.
