TANEATUA BRANCH MAY MEETING HELD The monthly meeting of the Taneatua W.I. was held in the Taneatua hall recently and was. presided over by Mrs Gardner. The meeting was opened with the Institute song and Aspirations, after which a welcome was extended to Mr.s Stewart, of Wlia'katane, who had demonstrated arts and crafts to members, of the. Institute during the morning, and to Mrs Mead, a former member. The minutes of the. previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mrs Grey gave an interesting report on the annual meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation, and apuealed to members to help with knitting for the Merchant Navy. The president congratulated Mrs Grey on being elected to the. Provincial Executive. Mrs Stewart then gave a very interesting talk on a visit she had made to Milford Sound, this being the second talk of the Golden Thread series. The roll call "Native Trees and Shrubs," proved very instructive," as members brought samples and named them. Mrs Bennett gave pleasing renderings of two Maori songs "Home Sweet Home." sung in Maori, and "Hold Hold." Mrs Gardner then read an 'extract from "Pioneer Tales" and members then worked out a wall competition, jumbled names of New Zealand towns, while afternoon tea was prepared. . Competitions were won as follows: A, three kumeras: Mrs Kempton 1; Mrs Moore 2. li, Maori sketch: Mrs Gardner 1; Mrs Merrie 2. C, Best flower: Mrs Rend 1; Mrs Grey 2. After a delicious afternoon tea, the. meeting closed with the National Anthem. GARDENING CIRCLE The annual meeting of the Gardening Circle was held on Tuesday; May 23, at Mrs Moore's residence. In the absence of the president, Mrs Lawn, the chair was taken by Mrs Adams. The. minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and a welcome was extended to Mesdames Wylde and King of Waimana. The election of officers resulted in Mrs Adams being elected president, and Mrs Grey re-elected secretary and treasurer. It was decided to continue visiting members in 'alphabetical order, and also that hostesses should take, their turn in the same way. Mrs Adams offered to donate a small prize to the member proposing most new members during the year, and it was decided; to award a prize for the most entries in the annual competitions. Winners of the competitions for the year were as follows: A, Best vegetable: Mrs Adams 1; Mrs Doran and Mrs Grey 2. B, Best flower: Mrs Grey 1; Mrs Adams 2. C, Floral competition: Mrs Grey 1; Mrs Adams 2. Mrs Wylde presented Mrs Adams with the silver' vase for the vegetable' competition. This vase has been donated by Mrs Wylde who has most 'kindly offered to inscribe on it the names of the winners each year. Members then proceeded to inspect the neat and well kept flower and vegetable gardens, and then returned to the house for a competiftion which was won by Mrs Adams. .A dainty afternoon tea was then served, by the hostesses, Mesdames Gardner and Adams. Winners of the. monthly competitions were: A, Best vegetable: Mrs Merrie 1; Mr.s Adams 2. B, Best flowpr: Mrs Grey 1; Mrs Merrie 2. C, Best buttonhole: Mrs Bennett 1; Mrs Grey 2.
