THE WHITE HERON
ONLY NESTING PLACE EFFORTS AT PRESERVATLON Through concerted efforts, the only known nesting pla?e of the white heron in New Zealand —in South Westland —lia> been preserved from the encroaches of a sawmill nearby, said Dr. R. A. Fal'a,. curator of the Canterbury Museum in an address to members of the Dominion Aquarium and Pond Soc'ety in Christchurch recently. Dr Fall.n also dealt with the habits of kirgfishers, and other fish-eating bird . He said that only about 7 per cent of the kingfisher's diet consisted of fish, the rest, being made up of lizards, mice, crustacea, etc.
