WELCOME HOME AND FAREWELL DANCE The dance held last Thursday evening in the Waimana Hall to mark the welcome home of Corporal Sonny Ross, who was invalided back after being badly wounded was very well attended. The occasion also marked the farewell of five members of the Maori Battalion, Privates W. Rakuraku, W. Mahia, Toharua Takao, Rua Hilman, Mara'ki Heakite. Mr F. Sterling acted as M.C. and the dance music was supplied by the Waimana orchestra and extras were played by Mrs R. Bell and Rori. After supper Mr J. L. Burnett, in his usual most capable manner asked the guests of the evening to accept gifts of wallets and their contents, with best wishes for their future, and a safe return to their home town. Corporal Sonny Ross received a cheque from district residents, Mr J. L. Burnett wishing him a speedy recovery from the scars of battle. The company then joined in singing "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows" and "Maori Battalion." Two of the guests responded briefly, thanking Mr Burnett for the gifts and splendid evening given them, which was greatly appreciated. Dancing continued until a late hour when "Auld Lang Syne" and the National Anthem closed the evening.
