FIFTEEN STARTERS AN IMPOSING LINE-UP On the approach of the Borough Elections it is interesting to note that the electors will on this occasion be asked to make the widest selection from prospective candidates than has been - the case for many years. Fifteen nominations have been received for the eight vacant seats which speaks well for the increased public interest in local affairs since last election. There is no necessity to re-intro-duce Mr W. Sullivan, M.,P.» exMayor and public man of many years standing, nor is it necessary to emphasise Mr A. J. Canning's candidature. He is also well known to the Whakatane public as a prominent citizen over many years whose interests are Avidespread and varied. Mr S. S. Shapley who lias held the position of Deputy-Mayor for the past six years has a long period of service to his credit. As chairman of the Works Committee he has rendered valuable assistance in the maintenance and improvement of the Borough. Mr C. S. Armstrong another sitting Councillor is a Avell known and prominent citizen, with a Avide experience of local body procedure, and a long term of community service also to his credit. Mr T. J. Cummings Avhose lengthy term as! resident police office;! here has enabled him to Avatch the town and district evolve into the thriving town it is to-day has proved himself a competent and able councillor of exceptionally sound decision. Mr Joseph Creeke citizen and farmer has been the unfailing champion of the Maori m all subjects undei discussion at the council table. He is a fearless critic. Mr C. W. G. Good another Avell known businessman, is possibly the youngest, member of the past council. Secretary of the Qi&mfier"of Coniiiverce and the Retailers' Association, he carries a burden a public service as well and is a lone champion of the 'Rubbish Collection' agitation. Mr J. G. Mulholland, Automobile Association Agent, is Avell knoAvn in business and sporting circles. He has proved himself an able and conscientious councillor.
The new candidates are headed by Mr Robt Allen, a comparative new comer to Whakatane who is stand-, ing "officially in Labour Party interests. For nifiny years he was fore-man-overseer for the Rotorua County Council and took a keen interest in the. community life of that town. Mr N. S. Major also standing in Labour's interests, has been president. of the local branch for many years. He has been prominent in all Labour activities and needs no introduction to the Whakatane public. Coming to this town, from Tauranga nearly five, years ago, Mr Rex Morpeth has shown a never-failing interest in all causes deserving of help. He has been actively associated with the Scouting movement, the Rowing Club and the Welcome Home Committee. Mr L. R. Spring well known accountant has also been prominently associated with sport and committee work. A member of the Domain Board and the School Committee he has proved himself progressive, and enthusiastic. Returned soldier and businessman Mr C. F. Thomas, has filled his life with varied and useful activities. President of the Chamber of Commerce, prominent on the R.S.A., and in other directions he is also the enthusiastic S?outmaster of the local Scottish troop. Mr J. H. B. Warner., chairman of the School Committee, is a capable and forceful speaker and takes a keen interest in local affairs. Mr H. G. Warren, businessman and auditor, is another well known and willing worker in the interests of the town's organisations. One of the sponsors of the Boys Band he has been responsible for most of the executive work. He is a member of numerous other committees.
