WHAKATANE SUB-CENTRE PRESIDENT'S REPORT In her report to the annual meeting of the Whakatane Sub-centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, the Mrs E. C. Sullivan, gave a comprehensive review of the organisations activities. The report reads:— I have much pleasure in presenting our fifth annual report. The interest of our members is good. Our membership stands at 103, and I would like to increase it very substantially during the coming year. Financial We have, raised our funds mainly from efforts in our shop and by catering for two Gymkhanas held in the Borough. Our thanks are due to tlie many people who contributed in cash and kind to the good work, also to the Paper Mills employees, for so kindly donating the Society the proceeds of. their New Year Ball. Voluntary Aids The V.A. Detachment under Mrs F. Prideaux, Lady Superintendent, is at present doing good work at the hospital. No classes at present are being held as the Detachment is without a class room. The necessary finance has been obtained and now the arrangements are being completed to supply this want. Practical Work Clothing has. been handed to several families in the Borough, and some necessitous cases have been assisted with donations in cash. Donations of £200 free of exchange has been made to the Brtiish Red Cross
and £21 sent to Headquarters for the Chinese and Turkish Red Cross.Knitting and sewing has been done for the Joint Council and a supply of clothing sent forward to Headquarters, comprising 2 girls dresses, 11 boys suits, 1 pair rompers, 6 pairs bloomers!, 11 boys shirts, all made of grey flannel. Junior Division The Junior Red Cross is now under Miss Lawes, a High School Mistress. During the last year they raised- £8 3s 8d for prisoners' of war and also provided a children's library for. the local hospital. General I Xmas cheer for the hospital realised £8. A First Aid Kit was presented to the three schools in the district and a stretcher was also presented to the High School. Several parcels of used linen have been sent to a New Zealand Hospital in the Middle East. Visits During Year During the year we had one visit from the Dominion Chairman, Mr White, which was greatly... appreciated by all present. Several parties of American Servicemen sent here by the American Red Cross have been entertained in the district, and have; left behind them many bonds of friendship for our sister nation. Mrs A. G. Allan is in charge of this department, and has done excellent work. Thanks To our secretary, Mrs Winstone, our treasurer, Miss Jean Hunter, the convenor of the various committees, I wish to tender my very sincere thanks; also to each and every lady who lias contributed so much to the success of our efforts this year.
