FALSE FIRE ALARM
REFLECTION IN WINDOW A false alarm sent many of the townspeople of Whakatane scurrying down to the Strand shortly after 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening, where a fire was alleged to have broken out r in one of the office buildings. The alarm was apparently rung when a resident of Whakatane who happened to be passing on the. opposite side of the street noticed a red glow reflected in the window of the building, and mistaking it for a blaze already well under way, sound* ed the siren. However, upon closer investigation, the red glow turned out to be no more than a few red coals in the grate reflecting on the window pane. The fire brigade were" wrath indeed at being forced to rush away from their respective teas in order to extinguish »a nonexistent blaze, but nevertheless derived some satisfaction from smashing open a door or two.
