CRICKET SEASON REVIEW

GOOD FORM SHOWN i WIDE INTEREST IN SPORT A review of the 194.3/44 cricket season shows a very welcome growth of interest and activity in the sport, three representative matches having been played and five iteams entered in the competition. Honours were very even, the three awards going to Waimana (Allan Cup), Central (Clarlie Shield) and Whakatane United, who won second place in both of the other contests, emerging the winners of the championship for the Collin's Shield. The Representative team dcfcaited Rotorua, the holders, and secured the Attrill Cup for the first time in 24 years. The Whakatane United Club sponsored two other games in one of which the R.N.Z.A.F. team from Tauranga was defeated fairly comfortably. The second was a twoday match against (the Poverty Bay Representatives at Gisbornc. After the matting on concrete to i which the local players arc used, ] the turf wicket at Gisborne was a pleasant ;change and although the Whakatane batting was disappointing, the. bowlinjf was quite up to the standard of Povertyßßar,3 r , who won with several wickets in "hand. ' ■A feature of this match was the innings of I. 'Campbell and W. Rivett, who made a great effort to play out time, the former being at the wicItet for over 1% hours, and the lat-. ter for over an hour. Campbell was caught off the last ball of the match. During the season, public support Was responsible for a very handy pavilion being erected in the Domain, and apart from its use during competitions, it Avas of immense value when visiting teams were present. The ladies' commiittee presided on £u:ch occasions and their work for cricketers generally has been greatly appreciated. Individually, some fine- performances were put up. the most prominent for batting and bowling being W: J. McKenzie (United) and V. Miller- (Waimana). Best bowling figures were secured by K. Phillips (Central) with 57 wickets, at a cost of 4.8 runs each, while McKenzie, Rigden and J. Gajder annexed over 60 wickets each for the season. Three very fine, centuries were scored ithese being Avon by G. Wardlaw 130 not out; W. Mc law (Waimana) 130 not out; W. McKenzie (United) 130 not out; and V. Miller (Waimana) 113.
