WAIMANA NOTES
INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES The monthly meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuliou Women's Institute was held last Wednesday afternoon in ithe Waimana Hall. There was a good attendance of members, and Mrs Wylde presided. One new member, Mrs D. Bell, was welcomed. The motto for the month was, "Waste less —Give,, More." The meeting opened with members observing two minutes silence as a sister of the secretary (Mrs H. Wrtrdlaw) had passed away. The singing of the Institute song followed, and the. minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs Hewitt, acting-secretary. Mrs Wylde gave a full report of the annual Federation meeting which was held at Whakatane. Mrs John Addison was appointed treasurer of the Sales and Talent table. Mrs J. Wardlaw read a circular, asking members and women of the district to help as much as possible with supplying garments for the Lady Galway Guild, which are to be forwarded to the occupied countries. A most interesting talk and report of the W.i.'s links, Kilsby, Rugby and Dundee, were given by Mrs N. Clark. A letter Avas also read by Mrs T. Wardlaw from Dvr. Max Wardlaw, thanking the Institute members for the cake received, which Avas in perfect condition. Mrs, E. Frost of Taneatua, gave a most interesting demonstration on the making of bridal bouquets etc., a hearty vote of thanks' being accorded the demonstrator. The roll call was, books for soldiers, and was well responded to. An alphabetical quiz was Avon by Mrs T. Wardlaw with Mrs D. Boynton .second. The day's competitions were as
follo.ws: Bowl arranged for effect, Mrs Stevenson 1; Miss M. Wardlaw 2; Mrs T. Wardlaw 3. Scones without .butter, Mrs Hewitt 1; Mrs Gallagher 2; Mrs F. Bell 3. Best double flower,. Mrs F. Bell 1; Mrs Woolfield 2; Mrs T. Wardlaw 3. Best single flower, Mrs Hewitt 1; Mrs T.. Wardlaw 2; Miss Wardlaw 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Stansbury 1; Mrs Clark 2; Mrs! Wylde 3. The' president then passed a votte of thanks to the hostesses and judges and the meeting closed with the National Anthem.
GARDENING CIRCLE
The April meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women's Institute Gardening. Circle was held at Mrs Wylde's home. There was a good attendance of members, and Mrs John Addison presided. A general discussion took place on gardening at tills time of the year, and it was decided to grow cabbage and sweetpeas for competition. Wiriter lettuce plants were distributed amongst members by Mrs N. Cooper. A musical competition arranged by Mrs Wylde was won l:(y Mrs Cooper 1 and Mrs; Heather 2. Mrs King played the accompaniment for same. The day's competitions were: Posy, Mrs Wykle 1; Mrs King 2; Mrs Woolfield 3. Best llower, Mrs. Wool field 1; Mrs Wylde 2; Mrs Mitchell 3. vegetable, Mrs Wylde 1; Mrs Cooper 2; Mrs Mitchell 3. A dainty tea Avas served by the hostesses Mrs Cooper and Mrs Mitchcll. A vote of thanks to Mrs Wylde for the pleasant afternoon spent by all closed the meeting.
