Poor Existence of People
"I can't get over the poor existonce of the people in llic villages here," writes a New Zealand soldier with tiie X.Z.F..F. in Italy. "It is a cruel sight to see really old women down the muddy lanes with huge loads on t.hclr heads. Children hang about the cook-house in dozens and take whaLcver scraps we have to oiler them. They seem to enjoy the worst tucker as though it were a Christmas feast. It makes one realise what enormous problems post-war reconstruction will present to the Government heads."
