FAREWELL EVENING
REV. AND MRS G. V. THOMAS MR AND MRS S. F. MILLER The Methodist Hall at Whakatane was well filled last Thursday evening, when a combined farewell social for the. Rev. and Mrs G. V. Thomas, and to Mr and Mrs S. F. Miller took place. The evening was mainly promoted by friends, in the Whakatane Methodist community, but there were also others present who joined in warmly expressing their goodwill towards the guests of the occasion.
A programme of vocal, musical, and elocutionary items was made up as under: Pianoforte solo, Miss Gwen Kenyon; Elocution, Mr G. Brown; Solo, Mr H. Sargent; Humour, Mr A. F. Atwood; Quartet,, Mesdames Miller and Litchwark, and Messrs G. V. Thomas and G. Brown.
For the Ministers Association the Revs. H. Hogg and J. C. J. Wilson extended to both the Rev. and Mrs Thomas their good wishes, and trusted that they would make many friends in their new appointment at Te Ktiiti. The Rev. Thomas was presented with a book.
Mr F. Darvill, circuit steward, then wished the guests of the evening the best of luck in their new spheres. He mentioned the good work done by the Rev. and Mrs Thomas during their stay in Whakatane and their happy associations with all church activities. Of Mr and Mrs Miller, he. said that the district would be the poorer for their going and he would like them to know that their Whakatane friends wished them all success. Mr Darvill also extended a welcome to the Rev. A. F. Atwood. Other speakers were Mrs Comer (Guild), Messrs W. Teasdale and A. J. Canning and the Rev. Atwood. Miss Gwen Kenj r on then made a presentation to the Rev. and Mrs Thomas on behalf of the Bible Class students whilst Mrs A. J. Canning handed dainty bouquets to Mesdames Thomas and Miller.
The circuit Steward also presented the Rev. and Mrs Thomas with a cheque and a hanging mirror, and to Mr and Mrs MiMer an attractive fruit dish. Responding, the Rev. Thomas warmly thanked his friends for their generosity and thoughtfulness. Mr Miller also conveyed his thanks and appreciation, adding that both he and his wife would never forget the friendships which they had made in Whakatane.
Supper was then served by a committee of. ladies, and the evening broke up with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne."
