WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

OTAKIRI BIRTHDAY GATHERING

The 14th birthday of the Ofakiri Women's Institute was held in the Otakiri Hall on Wednesday, May 3. The meeting was presided over by Mrs Armstrong and opened with the "Ode to Friendship "

The report of the Council meeting was given by Mrs Mantell and business was dispersed with very quickly. The visitors were met by Mrs W. Murray and Mrs Mantell and the programme opened immediately with a musical competition, which was won by Miss K. Tunni■cliffe. Other competition winners were: Week-end competition, Mrs Missen. Wall competition, Mrs Moody. Rafflecs were won by Mrs McDonald, Onepu, (chocolates) and Mrs Missen (dinner).

A tongue-twister roll call caused much amusement, as did also the Initial Competition. The play reading by- the Drama Circle was very much appreciated and a song by Mrs Armstrong who is always popular With her singing was very much enjoyed by all.

A feature of the afternoon was the cutting of the beautifully iced cake. This was made by Mrs Missen and decorated by Mrs Armstrong. The candles were lit by Mrs. G. Murray and blown out by Mrs Woodberry and the cake was then cut by 'Mrs Jessup.

The foundation members of the Institute were then all presented with shoulder sprays.

Miss G. Harkness who is leaving the district was presented with Pioneer Tales and a very pretty posy.

The trading stall was well stock' ed and Mrs W. Murray who was in charge of this was kept very

busy. Tiie usual monthly competitions were very keenly contested and the winners were as follows: Bowl of flowers for effect, Mrs Armstrong 1; Mrs Man tell 2; Mrs Missen 3. Sponge roll, Mrs Missen 1; Mrs Armstrong 2; Mrs Mantell 3. Best flower s Mrs Peck 1; Mrs Armstrong 2; Mrs Hancock 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Peck 1; Mrs Jessup 2; Mrs Armstrong 3.

The singing of the National Anthem brought a most successful afternoon to a close.
