AERODROME

COUNTY'S ATTITUDE DISCUSSED

BOROUGH COUNCIL PUZZLEE>

Following receipt of the County Council's letter intimating that in view of its heavy flood 'Commitments, that Council was not prepared to go further at ihe present time with the proposal to establish a district = aerodrome, the Whakatane Borough was fated at its last meeting to receive almost on its heels a further letter from the Chamber of Commerce urging that the project be followed up vigorously and brought to a definite stage of reality. "That puts us in the cart properly," observed Gr Shapley, who added that such a substantial proposal could not be entertained by the Borough alone. Cr Canning strongly opposed any Idea of dropping the scheme. We • should encourage the Chamber all we can, he said, and get on with St. It was no good putting up the flood damage bogey, and if the Council reassured the Chamber it would indicate that it was not going to sleep on the job like the County •Council was. The Mayor: It is a matter for a joint effort. lit will be a pity if we tiave to drop it after going th'is far. "That letter from the County Council is only side-stepping the issue," said Cr Creeke. "The Government has merely ihe formation of an Air Board. There is no suggestion of spending a lot of money right away. It is merely to go into the matter and' explore the possibilities so that when the time is ripe everything will be ready to jnove." 'Cr Sullivan agreed, contending that the Council should re-approach the County pointing out. that all that was: required at present was the formation of a Board whereby to build up public opinion and if necessary construct an. aerodrome in 'future when the town and district ~would reap the benefit. Neither body was agreeable to spend funds until that stage was reached. He trusted that the' County Council -would see that aspect and nondrop •the matter entirely. On the motion of Cr Creeke, seconded by Cr Sullivan, it was. decided to write the County Council accordingly.
