PROPOSED AERODROME
CANNOT NOW BE CONSIDERED
COUNTY COUNCIL'S PROBLEMS
The Whakatane County Council last Wednesday decided: that owing to its heavy flood commitments it was not now in a position to consider any matters relating to' the establishment of a district aerodrome at the present timet. The subject was introduced by a letter received from the Whakatane Borough Council requesting a further conference, with the idea of going into the question of forming an Airport Board. "I think councillors will agree with this recommendation." said the chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett. "Why blame the flood for dodging it," asked Cr McCready, who went on to say that the council had enough on its hands quite apart from the aerodrome. It was not consistent, to merely sidestep a proposal of this nature without some reference to the ratepayers. The chairman: Well what would you propose doing? Cr McCready: Tell the ratepayers that we are considering a conference with the Borough Council with the idea of forming a district aerodrome and let them decide. Cr Hunter said that as long as jfcve was on the council any major project of that nature would be submitted to' the ratepayers first. The chairman: We have never committed the. ratepayers in the past to anything relative to an. aerodrome a"hd if tl*e matter crops up again we will be interested and can notify the. ratepayers accordingly. The recommendation #as adopted.
