PROPOSED DIVERSION

The engineer's proposal to divert the stream on the Ohope approach road, which during the last flood caused so much damage, caused some speculation to be made; by members at the meeting of the Wha'katane County Council last Wednesday. Mr Brebner explained that his idea was to overcome the necessity of bridging the approach road altogether. The' stream he said, could be diverted and carried by a new channel alongside the children's swimming bath to the sea. Cr Luxton asked drily what was going to happen to the swimming bath during the next flood. Cr McCready warned against any effort to divert mountain streams from the beds which they had worn and consolidated. Unless the new channel was concreted or heavily timbered, it. would be courting trouble to tackle the proposition. It was finally left to the engineer to bring down, a future report for consideration.
