THAT RUBBISH TIP
MEDICAL OFFICER'S CRITICISM
FIRMER CONTROL NECESSARY
Discussing the strongly critical letter from the Medical Officer of Health, the substance of which appeared! in our issue of Friday last, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, at the Borough Council meeting said that the whole question had been fully disfcussed at the meeting of the Works Committee when it had been decided to take stricter measures of control in future. Speaking of the rubbish collection in the business area, he added that it had been proved in the past that it, was not wanted by the majority of the business houses, for when it had been instituted some years ago, only three had taken advantage of it. Cr Shapley said that there was no doubt about the state of the rubbish tip. It was in a very bad state. I\n a recent inspection he had found all sorts of. perishable matter dumped there and it could become a grave menace. There was also the practice of dumping rubbish behind the shops on the Strand and polluting the river. He understood that the councilcould not prosecute offenders in that area as it was a private road. He would like further information on the subject as this habit should be stopped. Cr Creeke also urged that strong measures should be taken against those who offended in this respect.. The Mayor: We can't prosecute. Its a matter for the Harbour Board to implement its own by-laws, to put a s(top to it. The council decided, to write the Medical Officer intimating that steps were now being taken to control the tip and also that a tentative order had been placed for a suitable truck to carry out the town's rubbish collection.
