THE EASTER TOURNAMENT
GLEN MASSEY TEAM WINS POPULAR VICTORY
Headed by Con new the win by the visiting Glen Massey team was a popular finla£e to the Whakatane Bowling Club's first Easter Tournament whilch concluded last Tuesday after some strenuous and closely contestedl semi-final bowls;. The tourney has meant possibly one of the finest boosts for the local club in its history. The visitors without exception Avere loud in their praise for the manner in which the event was run and also for the uniformity of courtesy and hospitality shown them during their stay. Many have already booked their entry for next year's fixture which now appears inescapable. The president, Mr Littlejohn. presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up and congratulated the teams on their fine exhibition of bowling during the tournament, and he also thanked the ladies committee for the efficient manner in which they had managed the catering arrangements for the-club. Mr Connew and Mr Spratt replying congratulated the Whakatane. Bowling Club 011 the success of the tournament, and said they hoped to be present at the next Easßer Tournament held in Whakatane.
THE FINAL
PROGRESS REPORT In the final the teams were Merito, Pinker, Knight, G. Spratt (Te Puke) and Donaldson, Gair, Giraud, ConneAv (Glen Massey). The Te Puke team did not play up to their previous fo;rm and Avere outplayed by Connew's men. In the first head Glen Massey avcnt aAvay to a good start getting a four after Spratt missed with a drive but Te. Puke evened matters in the second, ConneAv taking his third shot out and leaving Te Puke 4 up. When tAvo doAvn on the third head Gair drew two beautiful shots; and ConneAv added another making the score 7 to 4, and on the next end Glen Massey added more: to their tally. Te Puke scored a single on the next end, and on the sixth Spratt was four doAvn Avhen he changed over, but with a good running shot he retrieved the position and scored a single making the board read 9—6 in ConneAv's favour. Merito on the seventh dreAv two good shots but." Gair dreAv one on the jack, Spratt drove and took out his second and third shots leaving Glen Massey three up Connew draAVing another to make the score 13—6. On the eighth Knight drew a beautiful shot but Connew trailed the jack for tAvo giving his team a nine point lead. Glen Massey scored tAA r o more on the ninth and Te Puke replied Avith a single on the tenth the score noAV reading 17 —7. On the next three ends. Glen Massey scored a one, two and a three increasing their lead to sixteen, Glen Massey again had the shot on the fourteenth and Knight burnt the head Avith a drive. Another drive from Knight on the next end put Te Puke from three doAvn to two up, but Giraud drew a shot i which Knight Avith his second bowl ! rested out for tAvo. ConneAv then dreAv the shot and Spratt missing AA'ith a drive left the board reading 24—7. Te Puke then scored a three, Glen •Massey replying Avith tAvo tAvos, the game ending on the nineteenth head with the score 28 to 10 in Connew's favour.
POST SECTION PLAY
Ist Round: A. Spratt (Te Puke) defeated W. Harris (Whakatane); G. Spratt (Te Puke) defeated BroAvn (Patumahoe); ConneAv (Glen Massey) defeated LaAvn (Taneatua). The game betAAeen Connew and LaAvn Avas a very fine exhibition of boAvling Connew having to get tAvo shots to Avin, on the last end. 2nd Round: ConneAv defeated A. Spratt; G. Spratt a bye. Whakatane-Taneatua Shield Teams to represent Whakatane in the game for the Whakatane-Tane-atua Shield, to be played at Whakatane to-morrow, are. as under:— Bennett, Coates, G. Head, Harris (s).
