MEDICAL SITUATION
DR. MAAKA APPOINTED TO - WHAKATANE The folloAving is the 1 reply of the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, Minister of Health, to a letter Avritten by Mr J. Whitehead, Hon. Secretary of the Whakatane Branch of the NeAV Zealand Labour Party, to the Health Department Avith regard to the medical situation in Whakatane:— "I knoAv that the position in very bad, but j'ou Avill be glad to knoAv that arrangements have been made for Dr. G . H. Maaka, who previously had an appointment under the Health Department at Taneatua, to return to Whakatane and to begin general practice there. Naturally his attention AA'ill be devoted very largely to the Maori population, but insofar as this is the case, it will relieve the. burden on. the others. "I realise that in addition to Dr. Maaka it is desirable to have at least, one other doctor in Whakatane or someAvhere in close proximity to the. toAA 7 n, and as soon as the position of medical personnel improves, I shall be happy to make arrangements to this end."
