Five Men in a Boat
Proof of the natural ability of Maoris to sail small boats was seen on Tuesday afternoon when five of our dusky comrades were engaged in navigating the entrance at the Heads, Whakatane, in a small (very small) flattie. Everything was going according to plan when suddenly the ttjg made its appearance round the headland after having towed the motor vessel 266 out to sea. Now the Port Whakatane possesess a fair wash, an small flatties are not built to weather washes, fair or otherwise, especially when overloaded to the extent of five adults, but far from panicing, the "crew" merely sat there and grinned and, although they received a bit of a wetting, they came through with colours flying (to say nothing of the language).
