TANEATUA'S BIG DAY
SPORTS AND GYMKHANA
LARGE CROWD ATTENDS
WIDE VARIETY OF EVENTS
All roads led to Taneatua last -Saturday when the Sports Meeting and Gymkhana held in the interests of the Patriotic Fund took place in Mr J. Moody's paddock which once again provided a splendid natural arena for a full and interesting programme. Though the. attendance was not as great a.s that favouring last year's event, it Avas nevertheless an interested and enthusiastic crowd & gave all winners the applause and encouragement they deserved. The horse section Avas if anything more popular than ever and entries in. the main items exceeded those of the proceeding meeting. Competition ■was keen and the standard high. The athletic section also saw good fields and produced some promising talent which will no doubt grace the Tunning courses at future meetings. The handling of the whole formidable. programme was once again a tribute to the committee and the /band of workers engaged in the /running of the various sections. Unfortunately owing to the paucity of entries it -was not possible to run the Highland Dancing Section as advertised, so several exhibition • dances were given. The children on the other hand made the best of the, selections by the Pipe Band which was in attendance and danced and capered on the boards throughout the afternoon. The presence of two American servicemen Avith their 'jeep' also made for another happy diversion for the children Avho were given joy-rides till further orders on the vacant padlock at the rear of the parking area. These lads from our Allied forces certainly made many young friends at Taneatua. The sports Ave re- definitely a credit to Taneatua and the greatest praise sis due to the live committee behind it and the .splendid staffing of the field by the small army of stewards and officials. Avho attended to the various events, stalls and side show& Reference must also be made to the wonderful Avorlc of the ladies 1 h\ the refreshment and luncheon booths, while those Avho organised and ran the Maori hangi are likewise deserving of the-highest praise. .The list of awards- was as under:— Horse Events TBest Troop Horse:.
