WHAKATANE BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
FOLLOWING a suggestion made at a recent meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, steps have been taken to reform a Beautifying Society to carry out improvements in the Borough. The new organisation is to be known as the Whakatane Beautifying Society and the annual subscription for membership has been fixed at five shillings. The Executive Officers and Committee comprise: Messrs J. Creeke (President), G. Brabant, S- R. Dillicar, C- L. Jordan, G. Kent and R. F. Smith (Hon. Secretary and Treasurer). A canvass of a portion of the business community resulted in donations amounting to £7 10s being added to the funds. It is proposed to hold a general meeting of the Society next month when it is anticipated matters will be placed in train for a scheme of tree planting of certain areas in the Borough to be undertaken with the approval of the local Borough Council.
Petrol Position Serious "It is just problematical how long wc can hold on to passenger services," said the No. 1 Licensing Authority, Mr K. J. Phelan at a silting in Hamilton. Mr Phelan said the position in regard to petrol was becoming extremely serious and he bad instructions to see that as much %vear and tear on rubber as possible was saved by keeping the licenses down to the very minimum.
Liberation of Game Further liberations of game in the Bay of Plenty district, as far as Opotiki and Whakatane, have been made from the. Game Farm and Trout Hatchery conducted by the Depart-* ment of Internal Affairs at Ngongotaha. With the number to be released the season's quota to date, will be 800 pheasants and 300 duck, while more birds are scheduled for release in the Taupo area next week.
