PLUCKY MAKETU BOYS
TO THE RESCUE IN THE DARK. About six o'clock on Wednesda> evening a message came down to the Maketu Beach that away out to sea an upturned boat was to be seen drifting towards Tauranga and there appeared to be a man clinging to it. The aerodrome was contacted and a 'plane (lew over dropping flares. In the meantime George Fox,, Rakei Tapsell and P. O'Brien, three, young lads who happened to be available, set out over the treacherous, bar in the fast gathering gloom. With no little skill they crossed successfully and shot out to sea. Tit was not until they were within a few feet of the alleged "boat" that they discovered it was a cow floating more or less on its back. The boys successfully negotiated the bar about 8 p.m. Their action was a particularly plucky one as the hazards of a bar are well known. In a measure, all were relieved at the samewhat tame ending to the adventure but the will was there to do whatever may have been demanded.—Te Puke. Times.
