MEAT EXPORT

STORAGE AND SUPPLY CONDITIONS MEAT BOARD DISCUSSIONS One of the factors in the production ol". meat for export, the cool storage position, was closely examined by the New Zealand Meat Producers Board at its last meeting. The estimated production of meat for the balance of the season, and Hie probable shipping position in the future was considered. New factors which have an im-i portant bearing on the position this, season are that more export meat will go into stores as a result of the saving by the introduction of the meat rationing scheme', and that ewe mutton is being shipped to United Kingdom in the form of frozen carcases instead of being canned. In association with Government officials and representatives of the freezing and canning companies concerned, the Board went very fully into the position of assuring adequate supplies of beer for the forces in the South Pacific, as it had beI come necessary to overconie circumstances which have been created owing to the backward nature of the season. To ensure that the freezing works concerned with the killing of the necessary cattle can cope with the position, it may be necessary, states the Board, for such works to ease up a little on the killing of ewes for a short period. Itn this connection, the Board is appealing to the farmers concerned to co-operate to the utmost extent possible, having regard to their individual feed j position. lit was reported to the meeting that, in connection with the scheme for training students in Veterinary Science, in which the Board is associated with the Dairy Board, and the Government, about 15 students have been granted bursaries, and are proceeding to the Sydney University to take up their studies this year. Proposals submitted by the Government in regard to the credits which are accruing to the Meat Pool Account in respect to slipe wool and tallow were considered. As the suggestions made would impinge, on the funds of the Pool, the Board decided that it would not agree to the use of Pool moneys for the purposes suggested. With the present substantial credit balance in the Meat Pool Account, and having regard to the future position, the Board is making re* presentations to the Government in regard to the investment of a portion of the funds in Government' stocks. In conjunction with the. New Zealand Wool Council, the Meat Producers Board intends to convene a meeting of delegates comprising the Electoral Committee for the purpose of more fully informing them of the details of several matters of interest to meat and wool producers. The conference with the Meat Poard will take place on Thursday, April 20,
