WHAKATANE'S QUOTA
PATRIOTIC APPEAL 1914
MEETING OF MENS' COMMA. TEE
Nine persons attended the annual meeting of the Whakatane Men's Patriotic Committee held 1 last week, when His Worship the Mayor, who presided mentioned that the town had 1 succeeded in comfortably raising its quota and was now faced 1 with the prospect of meeting the new levy of £1300. Mr Barry expressed the greatest disappointment at the attendance which he said illustrated only too well the disinterestedness of the average resident towards the town's patriotic obligations. He went on to say that the ladies last year had made a further magnificent effort and had once, again promised, to come to the rescue by finding their proportion. The meeting considered the list of collectors, and some forty fames were mentioned to cover business areas and the residential parts of the Borough.
