A PLUCKY RESCUE
YOUNG BOY SAVED - INCIDENT AT EDGECUMBE A narrow escape from drowning was witnessed by upwards •of thirty people who were standing on the rail embankment at Edgecumbe at the height of the flood last Friday. The water was pouring through the sub-way ■under the line at a terrific pace, when what was thought to be a log whirled through, twisting and turning in the current. A Maori named Donna Ratahi, with sharper eyes than the rest •of the onlookers plunged into the torrent and 1 laid hold on the •object which turnedl out to be an/ eight year old boy, Bl'uqei Plank, son of Mr and Mrs Plank •of Edgecumbe., who muslt have been caught in the current higher up the river. Willing hands 'helped the two to the bank, where the boy ultimately recovered after treatment. All who "witnessed the incident hail the rescue as an. exceedingly plucky •one,, whicli undoubtedly saved the boy%/ life, and many warm butes are paid" to the Maori's prompt action, in performing what was a particularly hasardous rescue.
