Nelson's Anniversary

Tuesday was the 102 nd anniversary of the founding of the Nelson Province. The site of Nelson was chosen by a naval officer, Captain Arthur Wakefield, a brother of Edward Gibbon Wakefield, the driving force behind the New Zealand Company. Captain Wakefield was, killed in an episode with the Maoris not long after the infant settlement had celebrated its first anniversary.
