Last Hansom

The last hansom cab in Christchurch i.s to find a permanent home in the Canterbury Museum. This relic of early Christchurch has been offered to the authorities by the owner, Mr Robert Allen, who lor 44 years was, well known in the streets of the city as "Shiny Bob"—a tribute to the first-class condition in which lie kept his horses, cab and trappings. Mir Allen recalls the time when there were 150 to 200 cabs in Christchurch, but with the advent of motorised traffic they have dwindled, until in recent years Cab 96 has been brought out only on show and sale days, and for the benefit of those who like still to drive in "the old-fashione way."
