STOCK ON RAILWAY

EWE FAIR TRANSPORT

R EST MICTION R KMC)V El)

Restrictions on the carriage t»f live stock on the railways, following the cutting clown ot services by the shortage of coal, have been modified to include breeding sheep. This is of importance to the Hay of Plenty and Poverty Bay districts, which are concerned at present in the removal of many thousands ot breeding ewes from the district to many parts of the North Island.' Large numbers of these will use both the Gisborne railway to the south and also the Tancatua-"\\ aikato line. The original advice was that livii stock traffic was to be limited to animals for slaughter, but information received on Saturday was to the effect that ewes travelling to and from ewe fairs and rams proceeding to and fro for stud purposes also might be accepted. Since then a further modification was made to iiiclude "ewes for immediate breeding purposes," providing the- consignors give, a certificate accordirngly. A report from the Waikato states that arrangements have been made for the railing of six lots of East Coast sheep from Tancatua to the Waikato, and the first consignment left Tancatua .for Morrinsville on j Sunday night. Each lot is to con-1 tain between 2000 and 15000 sheep.
