He. was too far ahead to get back, so lie lay where he was. He soon found that he could riot escape., and he had to lie there motionless for (50 hours, in the daytime the Australians coaild see him and when he moved they fired at him. thinking lie was a .lap. At .night the Japanese, only five yards above, him. could hear him when he moved and they would fire. He could hear them talking and at times they threw scraps of foofl over the parapet. He was found exhausted and helpless when the position was taken.
