WORK IN CANADA

24.00 ON LABOUR PROJECTS

The Canadian Department oi' Labour announces that more than 2400 prisoners of war are now working at 25 labour projects across the. Dominion, mainly connected with the production of l'uel wood, says a bulletin from the Canadian High Commissioner's office. The announcement describes the production as ''very satisfactory." Some- use is; being made of. the perviccs of prisoners at farm wor'k. More than 60 have been assigned to farm jobs near Ottawa and 107 in the Brooks district, Alberta. IJn addition, more, than 500 prisoners. of war were used on daily work during the harvest, particularly in sugar beet areas in Alberta. In the labour projects now in operation accommodation for prisoners and guards is provided by the employer. Employers pay the. Department of Labour for the services of the prisoners at the current, rates of wages for isuch work adjusted to the work output. The prisoners receive from the department a daily rate of working pay whicli is fixed /n accordance, with provisions of the International Convention governing the employment of prisoners of war. The department adds that the fact that the use. of the services of prisoners of Avar is working very well is borne out by continuous requests from employers asking for more men. Discipline has. given rise to 110 difficulties.
