DISTRICT AERODROME PROSPECT
COUNTY COUNCIL DISCUSSION
When the Acting Controller of Civil Aviation advised the Whakatane County Council that the first step towards procuring a district aerodrome was the formation of an Airport Board he precipitated quite a neat little exchange between the chairman and Cr McCready. The council ■ on the other hand adopted the same attitude, as the Borough on the matter and decided to obtain greater information with regard to the duties of Airport Boards. "Ft seems that the ratepayers are never taken into the. council's confidence in these matters'," remarked Cr McCready drily. "They want to know how much longer they are expected to provide funds for utilitiessuch as .Hospital schemes, dromes etc. If the council objected to the Hospital scheme, on the 1 score of expenditure its inconsistent to expousc another big undertaking like the construction of an aerodrome, now that we've, missed the 'bus at Te T'C'ko. v The chairman: We. haven't missed the 'bus." Cr McCready: I'd like to take a bet on it. There are. going to be a lot of pretty strong objections to anything big. The chairman: You didn't support the Te Teka site, or-help us to get it. Cr McCready: It didn't need supporting when you go almost to your journeys end to catch a 'plane. You might as well walk. The chairman: The Government might eventually take over all aerodromes. Cr McCready: A pity they don't take over our hospitals and everything else, then the ratepayers would be happy,
