EFFECTIVE GUARDS IN PACIFIC

Trained dogs are proving effective guards on Pacific islands outposts. Watchdogs have been trained. to give the-alnfrm by growling, barking or just ''stiffening." -while, at task dogs have been taught, to disarm men and bail them up until help arrives. There is the case -of P-40. His incessant barking one- peaceful day turned out the guard. but they could see nothing. P-40 kept on barking and an hour later a Japanese glass lish-net float was washed ashore. In line for promotion P-40 blotted; his copy book when he killed the sergeant-major's cat. Trained to resent the casual visitor, the dogs are kept up to their job by the occasional appearance of a stranger (in well-padded clothes) who assaults one of their keepers. Australian dogs of all kinds are scattered all over the area as pets and ; mascots most smuggled in under the coats of .the flying men.
