ANOMALY REMOVED
BAY OF PLENTY MAILS
.An anomaly in regard to mails between Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty has been removed according to advice from the Postmaster-Gen-eral, the Hon. P. C. Webb, and in future a much speedier service Avill operate. Previously, mails from Gisborne to Whakatane were carried on three different road services and sometimes were not delivered until more than 48 hours after leaA'ing Gisborne, although passengers leaving Gisborne at the same time reached Whakatane in little more than live hours. Mails for Tauranga Avcre held for some time in Opotiki, then sent on to Tauranga and despatched, the folr loAving day to their >l*mal destination. In this case delivery Avas never made until *1.8 Jiours after leaving Gisborne,- whereas the passenger journey only occupies, about nine hours. The. alteration, Avhich is now in operation, is explained in the fol* lowing letter from the Minister to Mr W. Sullivan, M.P.,: "fin further reference to your representations on behalf of. Mr H. H. Barker, of Gisborne, I am pleased to inform you that arrangements have been made, for mails; to be received at Whakatane and Tauranga on the day of despatch from Gisborne. The mail for Whakatane will be carried to its destination by. the through .•service car, whilst tliat for Tauranga Avill be conveyed by car to Taneatua, thence to its destination by train." The mail for Tauranga wil: connect with a train leaving Tane-atu-i at 1 pm. so that there will be practically no delay in transit.
