OHOPE BEACH

MORE POPULAR THAN EVER

NEW YEAR ACTIfYIfrJES

Ohope Beach, more popular than ever was a scene of animation on New Year's Day and was a field day for the. Whakatane .Boys Brass Band under the able conductorship of Mr W. Jarrett who is entitled to great credit for the excellence of their playing which was much commented on by visitors .from all parts of New Zealand. The public showed its appreciation of the band's playing in a practical manner by donations to the extent of ne-irly £11 which were collected on the camp grounds while a small team of collectors was mustered to comb the picnickers and tournament tennis players at the Hostel courts, from Whakatane. Borough and County, resulting in a further £(> odd. The total collection was just J/'- short of £17.. The boys in the band were treated at intervals to ice creanu soft d.rinM and; cake, making an enjoyable and profitable day. The weather was all that could be desired and with the excellent music provided, the picnic ground was a very animated scene, in great contrast to the band's visit before on Boxing Day 1911 at the opening of the. children's Learn-to-Swim pool, when a cold rain and wind prevailed. A most successful tennis tournament was held at the hostel courts*, which resulted, in the debt on the Children's Lcarn-to-Swim Pool, being reduced by £5 lis (3d being the amount taken as entrance; fees from the players. Great credit is due to the organisers who worked hard with that object in view. There were 52 players. The winner of the gentleman player was Mr Dellow of Wellington with 59 points: The winner of. the ladies was Miss Redwood with the same total.
