NEW POST OFFICE
BOROUGH COUNCIL'S REACTION
LETTER l'() MINISTER
The fact that Te Aroha had recently received authority for the demolition of its old! post office and the erection of 1 a twostoried new building, was discussed by the Whakatane Borough Council last evening, when; it was stated that this town had been promised! a new structure to replace the present antiquated office no less than 7y 2 years ago. Cr Canning said he thought that it. was high time something was done about it. The. conditions under Avhicli the staff were; working were deplorable and he moved; that all these details be. brought to the. notice of the Minister and the urgency of the position stated. Cr Creeke agreed warmly stating that unless Whakatane pushed its own interests" nothing would ever be done. The Mayor then related an inters view which he had had with the Postmaster General' (Hon.: F.* Jones) at. the opening of the Tauranga aerodrome. The Minister had then promised to have the whole matter attended to. Later when tlic Hon. P. G. Webb was Postmaster Gen-, cral he liadi expressed astonishment at the building and said it was scandalous that, any staff should bo expected to work under such conditions. Cr Sliapley: And; the work of. thes postal staff lias been practically doubled since then. The Council decided to write the County Council, Harbour Board, Chamber of Commerce, other in-, t crested bodies and Mr W. Sullivan,, M.P., asking that renewed representations be made.
