SERPENTINE ROCK
STATEMENT BY MINISTER
A letter from the Minister of Agriculture,, Hon. 13. Roberts, in regard to serpentine- rock, received by the Wailii branch of the Farmers'"Union in reply to an inquiry as to prices, was received from the Hon. Secretary of the branch, Mrs. A. Blaekmore, at the monthly meeting of the Auckland Provincial Executive on loth December. The Minister slated : "When serpentine rock is mixed with hot superphosphate a chemical reaction ensues in which the identity of the serpentine as such, is lost. The effect of the serpentine is to produce a reverted superphosphate, and the fanner, therefore, does not pay £4 2s. Gel a ton for .serpentine but pays £3 l- s as for .serpentine-super-phosphate."' It was added that the profit made, on serpentine was no greater than the profit previously obtained by manufacturers for straight superphosphate- so used. The minister said that a large number of experiments with serpentine rock made by the Department showed that it was equally a.s eflee-; tive as superphosphate only. The. total quantity of serpentine used last year was o5,0U() tons. It was urged that thorough trials should be made before serpentine was discarded. Its use had been recommended by the Dominion Exee.utivc of the Farmers' ifnion. Further action was deferred by the Executive pending the receipt of a further ana.ysi.s of samples of
